They make music sound awesome.\u00a0 Some of this writing is based on actual theory, much of it on perception and opinion. This one definitely hit the \u201ctl\u201d portion though.\u00a0 Really.\u00a0 I do hope you\u2019ll stick around.\u00a0 Bring some popcorn and a beverage maybe.<\/p>\n<p>Full disclosure: I\u2019ve been a bass player for going on 30 years now.\u00a0 There is some inherent bias in pretty much everything that is to come ahead (read: fanboyism) so please take that into consideration as we go down the sub-frequency rabbit hole.\u00a0 The bottom end is near!<\/p>\n<h2>Why bass isn\u2019t just for fishing anymore<\/h2>\n<p>Story time!\u00a0 Children of the 80s represent.\u00a0 I grew up with the portable tape recorder and Walkman.\u00a0 Those machine speakers and walkmans (walkmen?) stock headphones are a very stripped down audio experience.\u00a0 Thanks to the efforts of an incredible neighbor, I was familiar with the wonderment that was the bass guitar due to his (and my) admiration of the band <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/auLBLk4ibAk?t=2\">Rush.<\/a>\u00a0 Their singer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=dptj4dMuS1w\">Geddy Lee<\/a> also served as bass player and is considered among the better known players in the modern era.\u00a0 More on that evolution later.<\/p>\n<p>Any stereo systems that I had access to had very little sub capability.\u00a0 I never knew of the sonic impact that properly tuned and projected low frequencies could have on the listening experience.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t until saving up enough KFC money that I was able to acquire a \u201cBoom Box\u201d with a \u201cTURBO BASS\u201d button that my mind was blown. Suddenly all the music I was listening to had a completely new dimension to it.\u00a0 What was once thin and wispy was thick and powerful.\u00a0 Kick drums in rock bands had some actual sonic footprint.\u00a0 The low brass and contrabass sections of the symphonies I was in love with sounded IMMENSE in comparison to Walkman headphones.\u00a0 It was incredible and only just getting started.<\/p>\n<h2>Enter: my first bass guitar<\/h2>\n<p>While painting figurines at a friend\u2019s house, he put on a CD by a band named <a href=\"http:\/\/primusville.com\/\">Primus<\/a> for me to hear for the first time.\u00a0 A song by name of <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/7j4J81-HTAs?t=6\">\u201cJerry was a Race Car Driver\u201d<\/a> came on and it featured a sound I had never heard before in the intro.\u00a0 When I asked what kind of guitar they were playing, I was informed that that was a bass.\u00a0 After I picked my jaw up off the floor, I vowed that I was going to make the bass guitar my life going forward.\u00a0 That following summer I acquired a very cheap knock-off bass guitar with action a mile high and a very small amplifier that made the sounds while providing almost no low-end benefit.\u00a0 It didn\u2019t matter; I was on my way to thinking I was going to be the next <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/hMsJlJdWof8?t=23\">Les Claypool.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I spent the entire summer trying to learn to play the thing using a quarter for a pick* and annoying the rest of my family. An entire blog on the process of learning the bass guitar and why it\u2019s so much fun could be written, I wager.\u00a0 We\u2019re getting off topic though so I\u2019m going to meander back to my supporting story.<\/p>\n<p>* I eventually switched to finger style and never looked back.\u00a0 Picks sound cool but it\u2019s just not my jam.<\/p>\n<h2>Low end discovery continues<\/h2>\n<p>Not long after this I went to my first live concert ever. 1993! <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=P4lZRrQ6XQ0\">Dream Theater<\/a> at Seattle\u2019s Paramount Theater.\u00a0 Didn\u2019t know I needed ear plugs.\u00a0 Also didn\u2019t know what powered subwoofers were.\u00a0 Dream Theater\u2019s drummer made liberal use of Double Kick drums and each and every thump was like knocking the wind out of my stomach.\u00a0 I went home feeling exhilarated and slightly numb \u2013 and partially deaf for the next two days because WOW was it loud \u2013 and sought to find a way to get some degree of that experience again in the home environment.<\/p>\n<p>A cheap Sears \u201cStereo Component System\u201d \u2013 you know, the kind where it\u2019s not actually components but just looks like it \u2013 was the next fast food money acquisition.\u00a0 The difference now was that it had a 12\u201d subwoofer built into the cabinet.\u00a0 Going from Turbo Bass to an actual and proper subwoofer was \u2013 once again \u2013 an extremely ear-opening experience. Those same kick drums now actually rattled the floor.\u00a0 Bass guitars rumbled the joists. \u00a0Blasting \u201cJames Brown is Dead\u201d generating a satisfying thump to the beat.\u00a0 Parents expressed displeasure, which I now know means I was doing it right.<\/p>\n<p>Everything just sounded so much more \u201ccomplete.\u201d\u00a0 What I didn\u2019t realize at the time was I was finally hearing music as it was meant to be heard, not an unreasonable facsimile.\u00a0 Like a filter had been removed from the listening experience and the gloves were off.\u00a0 I started discovering that there were different methods of mixing music throughout different eras.\u00a0 Before stereo upgrades, most everything sounded mixed the same.\u00a0 Balanced, accurate, thin.\u00a0 When the larger array of sound reproduction became available, mixing throughout the decades started to be revealed.<\/p>\n<h2>Examples of the differences<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/wBl2QGAIx1s?t=135\">Huey Lewis and the News<\/a> didn\u2019t sound mixed anything like Parliament Funkadelic.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=od-5gCO_PGE\">Parliament<\/a> (check out the bass line!!!!) didn\u2019t sound like Ben Folds.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Yr_s6-Q7f00\">Ben Folds<\/a> didn\u2019t sound like Nat King Cole.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=FOx8QBcIS8Y\">Nat King Cole<\/a> sure didn\u2019t sound like Metallica.\u00a0 Heck, Metallica didn\u2019t even sound like Metallica. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=kk6wLZN4X74&amp;list=OLAK5uy_k4yeBNbCJLDBeqj_QsTlpRoncOxmGLQDo\">Ride the Lightning<\/a> was a thinner balanced mix.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ioZeYpab3no&amp;list=OLAK5uy_kwDDSWKgSgMcCmR7XGOZ7KTyxK-XJO-fo\">Justice<\/a> was bereft of bass guitar due to \u2026 well \u2026 new-guy hazing and pettiness.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=o3RnYlBfaSo\">The Black Album<\/a> was a ginormous wall of sound thanks to the efforts of Bob Rock.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Hdil-F6B1gk&amp;list=OLAK5uy_n0TUfvlyGxmK7I2oJBSKwKfQjs0TQ1MGY\">Death Magnetic\u2019s<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/preview.redd.it\/h4o42xnsrmi21.png?auto=webp&amp;s=16bb86065d77e39a62173eb4782edd1bdcbf6ce7\">waveform<\/a> looks like a pancake.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re a Rush afficionado, you\u2019re very familiar with the very sterile and accurate mixes leading up to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Wonn3me3FEA&amp;list=OLAK5uy_n3UjTNYFtLASlXpfb266rWVcL3s2fLsCg\">Roll the Bones<\/a>.\u00a0 You were probably as shocked as I was when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7BTtBrto__U&amp;list=OLAK5uy_kbCXmgFiIP-O_90qV9bzKycSvQImwpuhw\">Counterparts<\/a> released and suddenly everything was MASSIVE.\u00a0 We can all thank Kevin \u201cCaveman\u201d Shirley for that shift in direction.<\/p>\n<h2>What absent bass can do for or to a song<\/h2>\n<p>As an album mixing engineer, I learned the hard way that the absence of low end material leaves a full band mix lifeless and thin.\u00a0 Like making something sound like Walkman headphones but on good speakers. Mixing my own band\u2019s album ended up with them revealing that I my bass parts too low.\u00a0 It really only took a few decibels of increase on the bass channel and suddenly everything gelled properly. Low frequency necessity.<\/p>\n<p>Back to Metallica. \u2026And Justice for All had the bass guitar eliminated in the final mixes.\u00a0 If listen to a video with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vumrar1k928\">bass put back in<\/a>, it\u2019s a more complete experience.\u00a0 A better one, if I were to opine on the matter.\u00a0 Thicker, fuller, less sterile and more fulfilling.<\/p>\n<p>As a kid, Prince\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=zp200BFqyBc\">\u201cWhen Doves Cry\u201d<\/a> would play and something didn\u2019t feel right.\u00a0 There are rumors that when he mixed down that track he accidentally left the bass track muted.\u00a0 Others indicate that it was a conscious decision even though there was a bass line recorded.\u00a0 Either way, he liked the way it sounded as a contrast so it was kept that way and presented in the iconic form that we all now know and love.<\/p>\n<h2>Why the club next door sounds muddy in your living room<\/h2>\n<p>I\u2019ll try to condense the technical side of this into something a bit more malleable.\u00a0 Being outside a club or next to a car that is blasting a song usually sounds like what we call <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=M1vXvBMIUJc\">\u201cmud.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0 Low and middle-range frequencies just permeating through the atmosphere and giving you an ear ache.\u00a0 There\u2019s a reason why it sounds like that!<\/p>\n<p>Higher frequencies have tighter waveforms and are not able to penetrate through solid surfaces as easily as lower frequencies.\u00a0 They bounce back and all around in the car, the club, the concert hall.\u00a0 Low frequencies, by virtue of their much longer wavelength, can more easily just pass through solid surfaces.\u00a0 Kinda like Vision in the Marvel movies but with fewer Infinity Stones.\u00a0 Lower frequencies are not absorbed and reflected like higher ones so they travel further and have a healthy disrespect for boundaries. As such, when you\u2019re outside the club you\u2019re only getting frequencies that can pass through the walls and it sounds muffled.\u00a0 Stand next to the back door with the security guard and suddenly the clarity returns.\u00a0 Fewer blockages outside that door!<\/p>\n<h2>The bottom (end) line<\/h2>\n<p>We are happier campers for having the tools to hear music in all its full sonic glory.\u00a0 Even ear buds are today tuned in a way that low end frequencies can actually be heard.\u00a0 Some laptops have \u201cwoofers\u201d in them with some wild psychoacoustic encasings to bring out low end from a very small form factor.\u00a0 Music producers and music listeners are in accord!
