{"id":357,"date":"2022-01-24T19:56:46","date_gmt":"2022-01-24T19:56:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/georgenowik.com\/?p=357"},"modified":"2022-02-03T22:40:28","modified_gmt":"2022-02-03T22:40:28","slug":"idiom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/georgenowik.com\/index.php\/2022\/01\/24\/idiom\/","title":{"rendered":"Interesting Idiom Investigation: &#8220;You can&#8217;t have your cake and eat it too&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>&#8211; Or: Backwards logic in our idiom language is bonkers and super fun<\/h2>\n<p>Idiom.\u00a0 No, that is not what you call yourself when you drop a hammer on your big toe because you were carrying too many things and you <em>knew<\/em> you were carrying too many things.\u00a0 There&#8217;s no shame in admitting you were wrong about that.\u00a0 You also earned that funny walk you did for about a week.<\/p>\n<p>Oh wait, back to idioms.\u00a0 They are fascinating linguistic things that we say &#8211; we are focusing on English in this case &#8211; that oftentimes have absolutely nothing to do with the subject at hand but are still viable in usage.\u00a0 Proverbial figures of speech.\u00a0 They mean something completely different out of the context but still effectively describe a thing or scenario without actually needing to reference the thing or scenario.<\/p>\n<p>Confused yet?\u00a0 Me too.\u00a0 And I just wrote the blasted paragraph.<\/p>\n<p>English is positively littered with these landmines and sometimes we say them without knowing what they mean.\u00a0 Sometimes we use them completely wrong and everyone smiles and nods because they use them wrong too. I would like to periodically pick one to dive into and explore because it&#8217;s my blog and I get to do that.\u00a0 Hopefully &#8211; HOPEFULLY &#8211; you&#8217;ll enjoy the ride along as much as I enjoy blathering on about it.<\/p>\n<h2>Idiom #01 &#8211; &#8220;You Can&#8217;t Have Your Cake and Eat It Too&#8221;<\/h2>\n<p>I can still vividly remember the first time I heard this phrase.\u00a0 You can&#8217;t have your cake and eat it too.\u00a0 My immediate mental reaction was &#8220;Uhh, yes you can.\u00a0 I have this cake.\u00a0 Figuratively.\u00a0 See?\u00a0 I&#8217;m holding figurative plate with the figurative cake in my figurative hands.\u00a0 Now I&#8217;m going to figuratively eat the cake, figuratively digest it, and probably get a figurative tummy ache because you served me too much figurative cake and I have no figurative or literal will power.\u00a0 THIS IS ON YOU, JASON.\u00a0 But anyway, I had the cake and then I ate it.\u00a0 The end.\u00a0 Roll credits.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The internal dialogue is complicated this morning.<\/p>\n<p>Moving along.<\/p>\n<p>It never made sense to me.\u00a0 You had the cake, then you ate the cake.\u00a0 I get that you&#8217;re trying to tell me I can&#8217;t have both scenarios in question but I very seriously (<em>elevated<\/em> levels of serious!) had both of the things.\u00a0 Which I would never say out loud because I don&#8217;t want to be obtuse or too dad-jokey or some kind of language snob or excessively picking of nits.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, now you can call me all those things because I&#8217;m actually saying it.\u00a0 Reciprocity is great!\u00a0 Tastes like chicken.<\/p>\n<p>So anyway, the phrase made absolutely no sense to me.\u00a0 In the time of less internet and more Britannica, finding out this information was a bit more complicated.\u00a0 Once the internet of things exploded as a searchable database (sorry, Britannica.\u00a0 we loved your really bone dry commercials.\u00a0 i mean come on.\u00a0 home improvement manual commercials were more interesting than what you put out there. &#8220;Read the book!&#8221;), it became easier to get to the bottom of things.<\/p>\n<p>So let&#8217;s get to the bottom of this one.<\/p>\n<p>(hahahaah that&#8217;s another one!\u00a0 &#8220;get to the bottom of it.&#8221;\u00a0 that wasn&#8217;t even on my list.\u00a0 it&#8217;s on my list now!\u00a0 WOOHOO!\u00a0 is this what they call meta?)<\/p>\n<h2>First documented use of this idiom<\/h2>\n<p>The first <a href=\"https:\/\/grammarist.com\/phrase\/have-your-cake-and-eat-it-too\/\">documented<\/a> English use of this idiom that we are currently aware of was from one Thomas to another.\u00a0 In 1538, the Duke of Norfolk (whose name was Thomas) wrote a letter to Thomas Cromwell (have you ever had cromwell cheese?\u00a0 holy cats it&#8217;s addictive) which contained the phrase &#8220;<em>you can&#8217;t have your cake and eat it too.&#8221;<\/em> Right there in italicized black and white.\u00a0 It might have even been italicized way back then because of fancy flowery script writing with inkwell calligraphy pens and everything.\u00a0 The phrase has other similar usages in other languages and if this was included in a letter in 1538 then chances are it was already in use prior to being put to paper.\u00a0 Or parchment.\u00a0 Or uhh, scroll?\u00a0 Little tiny scroll tied with a string and attached to a courier raven?<\/p>\n<h2>The intent of the use of this idiom<\/h2>\n<p>So to set aside my flaring level of obtuseness, the meaning of the idiom is summed up as &#8220;You cannot have both things.\u00a0 You must choose.\u00a0 Either one or the other, but not both.&#8221;\u00a0 It is not meant to illustrate the events in question or a nullification of the sequence of those events.\u00a0 You get to choose.\u00a0 One or the other.\u00a0 You cannot have the best of both worlds in the scenario that has been outlined.<\/p>\n<p>Examples of this idiomatic proverb in use: &#8220;You cannot claim to be a civil activist on one day and then be on the take for a politician the next.&#8221;\u00a0 &#8220;You cannot smash this guitar at the end of your encore and expect to be able to play it when unexpectedly called up to play a second encore. Also, don&#8217;t smash your guitar you performative entitled moron. Some kid could have used that to learn to play better than you.&#8221;\u00a0 &#8220;You can either spare your stomach a world of unmitigated hurt or you can ingest that Mountain Dew in your hand.\u00a0 Not both. Choose carefully.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>Why I think it&#8217;s backwards and how to fissit<\/h2>\n<p>Back to the idea of picking ALL the nits.\u00a0 ALL OF THEM.\u00a0 The concept makes sense but I feel personally that it is being said backwards.\u00a0 For it to make sense, again in my extremely prideful opinion, the actions need to be reversed.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You can&#8217;t eat your cake and have it to.&#8221; Or &#8220;You can&#8217;t eat your cake and also hold it in your hands (on a plate. seriously.\u00a0 be moar civilized).&#8221;\u00a0 Something to that effect.\u00a0 The implication makes more sense in my bizarre way of thinking.\u00a0 In order to illustrate the notion of not being able to have the best of both worlds, the action of consuming the good thing must take place prior to the activity of still possessing the good thing.\u00a0 If you eat the cake, you cannot retain possession of the cake.<\/p>\n<h2>Conclusionary statement of stuff<\/h2>\n<p>This disjointed blog post has been brought to you by the letter \u00c6.<\/p>\n<p>But seriously, I&#8217;ve been making a list of a whole bunch of these and am thinking of peppering them in for the sake of being slightly more interesting and not diving into <a href=\"https:\/\/georgenowik.com\/index.php\/2022\/01\/17\/tourettes-or-not-to-urettes-that-is-the-question\/\">super heavy topics<\/a> <em>every<\/em> time.
