The man literally effulged and <em>radiated<\/em> on stage.\u00a0 High heels may have been the order of business for his height but holy cow could that man <em>move<\/em> on the floor. He was also a savant-level musician.\u00a0 A multi-instrumentalist and prolific writer who, at age 18, inked his first contentious record label contract.<\/p>\n<p>His recording facility &#8211; the immense, legendary, and aforementioned Paisley Park &#8211; is where some of the most iconic music in modern pop history was written and recorded.\u00a0 Once upon a time, the only way to even get a glimpse was by the invitation of &#8220;The Purple One&#8221; himself. That all changed six years ago.<\/p>\n<h3>What transpired to make this possible<\/h3>\n<p>On April 21st, 2016 the life of Prince Rogers Nelson &#8211; known worldwide as Prince or, for roughly 6 years, The Symbol &#8211; ended in tragedy due to a story that is far to common in our modern era: an artist\/performer\/individual suffers from debilitating pain.\u00a0 Individual acquires medication to address pain.\u00a0 Efficacy of medication wanes requiring amounts more than prescribed to maintain baseline effective levels of pain management. Eventually the level of substance exceeds the threshold of what the human body can support. I can shut down under the weight of stroke, cardiac arrest, respiratory failure, and other causes of death.\u00a0 In the case of Prince and pain management medication, a specialist was literally in the air from California to Minnesota to stage an intervention and unfortunately was too late.<\/p>\n<p>In the aftermath of his passing, the recording facility he built and named Paisley Park was converted to a partial museum and tribute to his life and music.\u00a0 Tours are run regularly &#8211; advance ticket purchase and appointment highly recommended as most tours sell out &#8211; for individuals who would like to get a glimpse into the legendary place where doves were alleged to have cried.<\/p>\n<p>I am one of those individuals, and because I was in Minneapolis for a spell, it was time to scratch off a bucket-list item and get a looksie.<\/p>\n<h2>Make him part of the tour<\/h2>\n<p>(if you get that reference, I will mail you a nickel)<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_504\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-504\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-504\" src=\"https:\/\/georgenowik.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/PXL_20220519_161156306-300x226.jpg\" alt=\"Purple Traffic Cones\" width=\"300\" height=\"226\" srcset=\"https:\/\/georgenowik.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/PXL_20220519_161156306-200x151.jpg 200w, https:\/\/georgenowik.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/PXL_20220519_161156306-300x226.jpg 300w, https:\/\/georgenowik.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/PXL_20220519_161156306-400x301.jpg 400w, https:\/\/georgenowik.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/PXL_20220519_161156306-600x452.jpg 600w, https:\/\/georgenowik.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/PXL_20220519_161156306-768x578.jpg 768w, https:\/\/georgenowik.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/PXL_20220519_161156306-800x602.jpg 800w, https:\/\/georgenowik.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/PXL_20220519_161156306-1024x771.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/georgenowik.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/PXL_20220519_161156306-1200x904.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/georgenowik.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/PXL_20220519_161156306-1536x1157.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-504\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>There were purple traffic cones at Paisley Park. Because of course there were.<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p>The outside of Paisley Park was not at all what I expected it to be.\u00a0 Given the name, I was under the impression that it would be abstractly designed, a myriad of colors, a symbolic devotional of some form.\u00a0 Nope!\u00a0 It looks like a warehouse\/office building.\u00a0 With purple traffic cones and a purple &#8220;symbol&#8221; out front, but still a warehouse\/office building. So that was a surprise. Extremely utilitarian, efficience defined.<\/p>\n<p>In the event that you are able to secure a ticket to a Paisley Park tour,\u00a0 be <em>prompt<\/em>.\u00a0 This is a guided tour on a very strict timeline.\u00a0 Turns out traffic out of Minneapolis was extra thick on my way there and I was extremely lucky that I was still able to be in the tour time I was assigned.\u00a0 They hadn&#8217;t left the main lobby yet so they were able to get me into the group.<\/p>\n<p>Upon my arrival, a security guard handed me a pouch that locks, told me to turn my cell phone off, and place it inside.\u00a0 Wait.\u00a0 What?<\/p>\n<p>Prince was an extremely private individual and <em>adamant <\/em>that even celebrities were not permitted to take pictures while in the compound.\u00a0 His desire for privacy in Paisley Park continues on.\u00a0 I was informed that the pouch would be unlocked later on in the tour.\u00a0 So, I went dark and joined the tour!<\/p>\n<h2>The Atrium<\/h2>\n<p>The very first room we entered was a two story atrium.\u00a0 The entire room was lit naturally by a whole array of glass ceiling panes high above, with doves painted on many parts of the wall.\u00a0 It&#8217;s been told that Prince used to love sitting in the atrium to watch doves jump around the class ceiling panels and his fascination with the bird lasted though most of his life.<\/p>\n<p>During his lifetime, he kept doves in a large cage on the second floor.\u00a0 That tradition continues to this day by the staff of the museum.\u00a0 They were not, in fact, crying though.<\/p>\n<p>The atrium maintains its extremely comfortable vibe and I cannot even begin to imagine the number of musical luminaries who could have been there and lounged on the extremely comfortable-looking furniture.<\/p>\n<p>Side note: do not sit on the furniture.\u00a0 Not even the super comfy-looking couches.\u00a0 One guy started to make that faux pas and was barely able to even get a single cheek to make contact with cushion before our guide informed him quite directly that he shall not do that. I wonder how many times she has to do that even though there are signs on the furniture saying please don&#8217;t sit on the furniture&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>One final note: the walls were completely lined with framed gold, platinum, double platinum, quadruple platinum framed album awards.\u00a0 This was apparently not the case when Prince was still alive but placed there after his passing for folks who tour the facility to see just how prolific he was and how many people appreciated what he created.<\/p>\n<h2>The ante rooms<\/h2>\n<p>There are rooms off of the Atrium that served a variety of purposes.\u00a0 The most obvious one was the miniature diner.\u00a0 Yes, an actual fully functional mini-diner!\u00a0 With booth seats, a small kitchen, the whole kit &#8216;n kaboodle (note to self: another idiom to pursue).\u00a0 While it looked cute, it also served the purpose of treating guests to meals while there in a comfortable and unique setting.\u00a0 Very unexpected! This is likely the very room that pancakes were served to Eddie and Charlie Murphy after getting their collective hindquarters handed to them by Prince in a game of basketball.\u00a0 Yes, this is a true story.\u00a0 Yes, Prince is extremely short for a baller but dude was a <em>baller<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h3>On the sidelines<\/h3>\n<p>Smaller anterooms that were once utilized for music listening and video viewing have since been converted to rooms that pay tribute to various stages of his life and career.\u00a0 One room a video room for introducing his career for tour attendees to view before exploring other rooms.\u00a0 His early years as a freshly minted contract with Warner that led to a significant amount of musical output and his meteoric rise to stardom. One of the rooms delved into explorations into topics that did not seem to be even remotely compatible with his Jehovas Witness believes.<\/p>\n<p>(side note: at <em>no point<\/em> was his faith mentioned in any part of the tour or on display in any area that I was able to see.<\/p>\n<p>Yet another room is devoted to his most recent music project: his all-girl band &#8220;3rdeyegirl.&#8221;\u00a0 Yes! The drum kit used in that group was on display with a video screen playing their music.\u00a0 Incredible band!<\/p>\n<h3>Office space<\/h3>\n<p>The final anteroom was actually his office.\u00a0 I&#8217;m not sure what it would have looked like when in use by him but most of it was roped off with enough standing area for maybe 6 people.\u00a0 On the screen was a video being played talking about one of the major themes of his career: things he loathed about the music industry.\u00a0 How powerful individual without any talent defined what talent is for the masses.\u00a0 He was not a fan of that concept.\u00a0 The office had a desk, seating areas, some books, and a corner devoted to his Symbol.<\/p>\n<h2>Studio A<\/h2>\n<p>The primary recording space in Paisley Park.<\/p>\n<p>Oh my goodness.\u00a0 The thing I was most looking forward to throughout the entire tour.\u00a0 And there we were.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll separate the description into two categories<\/p>\n<h3>Incomparable Design<\/h3>\n<p>The room was stunning from just an aesthetic perspective.\u00a0 Stained and sealed wood paneling everywhere.\u00a0 Properly treated and shaped, as would be expected from a high caliber recording facility.\u00a0 The ceiling cloud &#8211; a sound absorbing giant panel with lights built in &#8211; hung at a perfect angle above.\u00a0 At one point, a video was shown of Prince jamming a bit with legendary bassist Larry Grahm. He was someone Prince looked up to and admired greatly. He is also one of the godfathers of what we know as Slap Bass.<\/p>\n<p>There were side rooms as well for varying instrument isolations.\u00a0 Drums had their own space.\u00a0 Separate guitar area.\u00a0 Bass had its own station. All of the rooms were in the same picture perfect design.\u00a0 The space looked and sounded just so <em>perfect<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>(I&#8217;m not even putting recording there on my bucket list; it&#8217;ll never happen.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll just have to build my own space!)<\/p>\n<h3>Inaccessible Control Room<\/h3>\n<p>The control room with the recording console and such were not accessible to the public. We <em>were<\/em> able to see two of his synthesizer instruments on display through the glass! His Linn Drum machine and his Oberheim OB-X.\u00a0 Two instruments that defined so much of the 80s sound (remember that time when I <a href=\"https:\/\/georgenowik.com\/index.php\/2021\/12\/06\/what-is-it-about-80s-music\/\">wrote about that very same thing?\u00a0<\/a> Wacky fun). Between them and extending dead center into the console area was a giant microphone stand with a mic at the end of it.\u00a0 This is the mic that Prince would use when clearing the entire studio before recording vocals.\u00a0 While sitting down.\u00a0 Because of course he can.<\/p>\n<p>Doves <em>definitely<\/em> cried in that room.<\/p>\n<p>I would have truly enjoyed being able to spend more time in there, get into the control room, and just exist in that space but the tour had to go on.<\/p>\n<h2>And we&#8217;re walking, we&#8217;re walking<\/h2>\n<p>The next studio on the tour was an interesting location!\u00a0 The first thing noticed is that it was a complete tribute to Purple Rain.\u00a0 Everything from one of the three motorcycles used in the movie to outfits worn to handwritten notes to the actual vending machine in the movie.<\/p>\n<p>There was a control room off to the left upon entry which meant that this was a functional studio.\u00a0 Patch panels in the walls confirmed this.\u00a0 What I could not figure out at first was the fact that the room had REALLY high ceilings, hardwood floors, parallel walls, and absolutely no absorption on the walls whatsoever.<\/p>\n<p>Before I could ask if this had been used as a basketball court at some point, our tour guide let us know that this used to be a multipurpose room where &#8211; you guessed it &#8211; it served as indoor basketball court, dance rehearsal studio, and also (really) live recording room.\u00a0 Definitely the epitome of a multipurpose room.\u00a0 The only thing missing would be folding cafeteria tables for school kids to eat lunch at!<\/p>\n<h2>I ask the tough questions so you don&#8217;t have to<\/h2>\n<p>Once our guide had finished an explanation of the room and artifacts and left us to our own devices (without our devices) I quietly asked her how on earth this could have been used to record in with the way the walls were set up.\u00a0 The other studio rooms that I could see were all very carefully designed and treated for optimal sound recording.\u00a0 This one broke all the rules in the not-good ways.\u00a0 She said that she couldn&#8217;t remember the exact details.<\/p>\n<p>So I wandered around a bit more and eventually looked all the way up to the ceiling and saw that there was a track that went all the way around the perimeter of the room at the ceiling level with chains hanging from them.\u00a0 Ah-hah moment!\u00a0 I asked if sound blankets were hung from those chains when used for recording and she said that was the detail she was forgetting.\u00a0 She said that the track could be raised and lowered as well to change the overall sound.\u00a0 COOL!<\/p>\n<p>Side note: I asked a LOT of questions of her that were very specific to rooms and recording and she had answers for many of them!\u00a0 I did -not- ask those questions until she released us to explore each room.\u00a0 I&#8217;m a nerd, but I&#8217;m not -that- nerd.<\/p>\n<h2>The Effervescent Paisley Park Footwear Extravaganza<\/h2>\n<p>For anyone who has ever seen Prince perform either live and in person or on television or at awards shows, there is one thing to take into consideration; his fashion was incomparable.\u00a0 Matching his incomparable sense of fashion came with the contracting of all of his footwear needs to incredible shoemakers.\u00a0 Every pair of shoes that he wore was constructed to exactly match the shape of his feet. Every pair hand created.\u00a0 Oftentimes the designs were sketched out by him in advance, sent to the shoemakers for any design change needs, and then ultimately created.<\/p>\n<h3>Not your average foot locker<\/h3>\n<p>The previous paragraph leads us to the next display room. When we entered the room, it was completely dark.\u00a0 Music started to play, lights started to pulse in sequence, and one by one a giant display case would light up all around the room.\u00a0 Finally, the entire room was lit &#8211; including a display case that was the first ever 3D printed piano shell! &#8211; and we were able to gaze upon 300 pairs of custom made shoes.<\/p>\n<h3>A look under the hood<\/h3>\n<p>A video screen had some of the shoemakers discussing the entire process: how sketches were received, what they did with them, how they made the actual shoes, and even the times they were invited to Paisley Park for consultation.\u00a0 Prince was very hands on and they felt incredibly honored to be able to work with a high-profile client who was so directly involved in the process of seeing a vision come to life.<\/p>\n<p>Cobblers worked on overtime.\u00a0 Apparently Prince busted heels <em>constantly<\/em> meaning the shoes needed backups and options for speedy repair.\u00a0 This is not any kind of dig on the build quality of the shoes, mind you.\u00a0 All were hand made and of the highest integrity.\u00a0 This was more to do with the fact that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ufehm7pDr2g\">Prince<\/a> was an <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=4oKQjlqCPS0\">incredible<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=cYqwHwnefLM\">dancer<\/a>.\u00a0 <\/em>In addition to, you know, being good at every instrument he touched.<\/p>\n<h2>Brief visit to the end of the Symbol Era<\/h2>\n<p>Upon leaving the basketball court, we were taken to a small side room with a very comfy looking couch.<\/p>\n<p>(as a reminder, do <em>not<\/em> sit on the furniture)<\/p>\n<p>Inside the room was again a prominent version of The Symbol, a display case with some handwritten notes on notebook paper, and another of his stunning outfits.\u00a0 Those notes, it turns out, were the notes that he read in a public statement announcing that on December 31st, 1999, his contract with Warner had finally expired.<\/p>\n<p>This was an immense deal for him in his fight for artist rights.\u00a0 He had a phrase that had significant meaning to him and most musicians.\u00a0 &#8220;If you don&#8217;t own your masters <em>(referring to the master tapes of his albums)<\/em>, your master owns you.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It wouldn&#8217;t be until 2014 that he was able to fully regain control of his own masters, the the end of that contract in 1999 &#8211; Open invitation. In that club, Prince jumped on stage and proceeded to serenade her.\u00a0 For Three. Hours. Straight.\u00a0 I&#8217;m trying to imagine being Madonna, an accomplished musician and singer in her own right, being right there while one of the greatest musicians of our era put on a show just for her.\u00a0 There are probably interviews about it somewhere but I think I&#8217;m going to enjoy just imagining it instead.<\/p>\n<h2>Tour OVER<\/h2>\n<p>That was the end of the tour!\u00a0 We were told that we were welcome to stay in Club NPG for as long as we would like. That was nice!\u00a0 And of course stop in a gift shop on the way out.
